The issue of creating a state university in the city of Cheboksary was raised back in 1920 by the revolutionary committee and the 1st Congress of Soviets of the Chuvash Autonomous Region, as well as in 1958-1959, but the creation of the university was postponed each time. By 1967, three universities were already operating in Cheboksary:, and the Volga branch. 1967-1990
