This name was first mentioned in the writings of the ancient Greeks about 2500 years ago. It is believed that "Caucasus" from an even more ancient, Sanskrit language means "Brilliant Mountains". The name "Elbrus" is more often associated with the Persian language - "Albros" in this language means - a high mountain.

Dagestan - "mountainous country" (from the Turkic words dag - "mountain" and stan - "country, land").

Don - the name given by the Iranian-speaking peoples who once lived on the territory of the Northern Black Sea region, in whose language the don means "river".

Kuban - the name of this river comes from the Karachai word "kyoban" and means "big river".

Terek - also means "river", only translated from ancient Turkic.

The name of the capital of the region - the city of Stavropol - contains many different secrets, although the date of foundation of fortress No. 8 (1777), around which it was formed, is well known.

The word "Stavropol" in translation into Russian from Greek means "the city of the cross" ("stavros" - the cross, "polis" - the city). Greek name for a Russian fortress? And why as many as three identical names in Russia? This is the name of the fortress, founded back in 1722 at the behest of Peter I in the lower reaches of the Sulak River, which flows into the Caspian Sea south of the Terek River, and the fortress, and then the city of Stavropol on the river. Volga (founded in 1737) and our fortress - Stavropol (1777).

Immediately, we note that the ancient Greeks had nothing to do with the foundation of these fortresses.
