In 2009, the city of Arkhangelsk was awarded the honorary title "City of Military Glory" (decree of the President of the Russian Federation dated December 5, 2009 No. 1386).

Stele of military glory:

In accordance with the Decree, on August 31, 2011, a stele "The city of Arkhangelsk - the city of military glory" was installed on the embankment of the Northern Dvina.

Day of the city :

Day of the city of Arkhangelsk is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of June. Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584. The population is 351 thousand people

History reference:

Arkhangelsk was founded in 1584 by decree of Ivan the Terrible, initially as a military fortress, an outpost of the Russian state in the North. It has remained so throughout its history. The very name of the city in honor of the leader of the heavenly host Michael the Archangel largely determined its purpose: to protect the northern Russian borders. The position of Arkhangelsk as a powerful fortress and large (and to the foundation Saint Petersburg the only one), seaport Russia was determined by its geopolitical position. It is no coincidence that in the military-strategic plans of Russia and its allies, the defense of Arkhangelsk has always been given a special place, and its role has sharply increased precisely in wartime. In almost all major military conflicts since the founding of the city, the enemy has sought to capture or destroy Arkhangelsk. Detailed information can be found at the relevant links.
