About tutors
Tutors mostly become when you need money, but there is no time to earn it. More than half of the tutors are students or recent students (the rest are school and university teachers). At the time when I decided to look for students, my student friends had been teaching for several years.
Tutors teach everything: mathematics, physics, chemistry, photography, drawing, etc. But most often languages, starting with Russian.
So I, having gone to the Spbrepetitor website to register, indicated in the questionnaire (in addition to experience, education and the cost of an hour of classes) that I can teach not only English, but also Russian. Then I filled out the same application for Avito and waited.
The Russian language had to be abandoned almost immediately. A woman called me and said that her nephew needed help with Russian. The nephew was 29 years old, he came from some Arabic-speaking country. I decided to talk to the student himself - it turned out that he speaks tolerably, but with errors. He needed to improve his Russian language in order to get a job in a security company. We agreed on a lesson for 500 rubles / hour, we decided to set a date later.
The 29-year-old student did not call back for a long time, and in two months I found 5 students - all in English. When he called, I canceled the class. Because you need to prepare for every lesson. Teaching a second language requires separate training, it is not very convenient.
I found my five students in English different ways. The Spbrepetitor website never helped me, and Avito brought the first student. His name is Roma, now he is 11 years old. We've been doing it for two years now. Roma lives ten tram minutes from Ladozhskaya. It is very far for me to go to him, but I could not refuse the first student - suddenly there will be no second. Roma is studying at a school with in-depth study of English. At the time of the beginning of classes, he had the lowest language performance in the class, and his parents, not knowing English, could not help him.
All parents complain about the same thing: at school, everyone is galloping through Europe, and the children do not understand what exactly they have gone through. It is believed that in grade 3, students already know the basics of English grammar, all tenses, turns, articles, and so on. Accordingly, homework and test papers require this knowledge. And children cannot even translate the wording of the task for the exercise (textbooks are compiled in English from grade 2). As a result, few people study at school without a tutor.
About lessons
Meeting a new student is always very scary. You need to please both parents and the child, plus adequately assess his knowledge and report this assessment so as not to offend anyone (words like: “Your son can’t even connect two words, and in general he has a terrible upbringing,” you don’t need to say ). It is advisable to immediately state your method of work, even if it does not exist yet.
Usually the lesson takes place face-to-face with the student, in a separate room, parents do not interfere in the process. But Roma is an exception. He lives with his parents in a small one-room apartment, and we have almost family lessons: while we are studying, our parents are nearby and hear everything. This is a plus, the child has to behave adequately. And a minus, since the tutor has to do the same.
At first, we spent two lessons a week: one was spent on school homework, the second was spent on grammar, reading, playing games and watching cartoons. It is necessary to play: if the child is under 13-15 years old, his attention is enough for 40 minutes. Then he begins to crawl under the table, drop the pen and protest in other ways.
Games are invented right on the go: you can make a crossword puzzle, make riddles, do exercises. Roma liked the game most of all, for which you need to choose any 5 toys, remember what color they are, and then, with your eyes closed, guess by touch what kind of toy is, and name the colors. When you have learned the colors, you can come up with names, ages, classes, etc. for toys.
After Roma's mother was laid off at work, we work out once a week.
The ideal option is when students begin to perceive lessons as a game. In this case, they are waiting for the lesson. But even for the sake of the game, children do not like to do homework. I've already compiled a list of the tricks they use. The most common trick: "I lost my notebook and couldn't do my homework." Usually in the same notebook all the grammar passed is lost.
Roma demonstrated the most unique way. One day his mother called me and said: “We just can’t understand what is written in the assignment - it’s impossible to make out!” When I came and opened the notebook, I didn’t understand anything either: the letters were changed so that it was impossible to understand anything. Let's say "I want to read this book" becomes "I'm going to stop now." Roma assured me that he had nothing to do with this. Conclusion: for homework, separate notebooks are needed, and they should be kept by parents.
About students
The rest of the students were found through the site Nauchi.ru (there are several similar resources). After registration, the site itself looks for suitable students for you (they register there). The application for a tutor comes by e-mail or phone. All tutors receive the same applications, so the speed of reaction is important. It is necessary to get ahead of everyone and confirm the application on the site. In response, the student's phone number will be sent to you. Whoever calls first - that student usually gets it. Although I was refused a couple of times, even when I was the first: at first, because they were looking for an older woman with school experience, and another time, because they found a tutor near the house (and they wanted to study with a tutor).
The peculiarity of this site is that after 5 lessons you must pay the bank for the assistance received in the amount of the cost of one lesson. Representatives of the site control everything quite strictly: they call you and ask if 5 lessons have passed, then they call the student’s parents with the same question, clarify how much the lesson costs and whether they are satisfied with the work of the tutor. Once I was delaying payment for about a month - and they started calling me and reminding me: first every other day, then every day, then several times a day.
Students are different. For example, I got these.
Sasha and Alina, they were 7 and 5 years old at the time of the start of classes. They live in the Lakes. They are engaged in acrobatics, and their parents work in the police. We have classes on Sundays because everyone else is busy.
A lesson with them is a farce! You have to play almost constantly, because they are completely unable to sit still. Only if you need to draw or write, they can be seated at the table. Often the lesson ends with a 10-minute game of twister - but in English, to remember the arms and legs, right and left, and so on.
Timur is their neighbor, 13 years old, who found himself. He lives on the floor above, and therefore we also meet with him on Sundays. He has neither motivation nor knowledge of the language, so every time we learn anew simple words like "people" and "window".
Anya is a 9th grade student who lives 15 minutes from Roma. Her parents found me through friends and asked me to prepare her for the GIA in English. We prepared for six months, and then it turned out that instead of the GIA there would be an exam on texts from the collection. Since then, our meetings have become quite irregular.
Sometimes I really wanted to give up some students. At first, I experienced such a desire while studying with Roma. I studied with him at the lowest price - 350 rubles / hour - and did not see any progress. But while I was thinking, we managed to get used to each other. Once, when I was leaving, he asked: “Will you come tomorrow?” And I was very upset that I would have to wait another week. And I decided to be patient - and I was right.

In general, they usually look for a tutor so that: a) children bring good grades; b) the children passed the exam; c) just learn the language. The third case is the most pleasant. It is understood that the student himself wants to learn the language in order to read or speak it. Of my five students, 8-year-old Sasha is the most motivated: he is really interested.
Tutoring is quite an expense item for the family budget, especially if you study more than once a week. The cost of an hour starts from 400 rubles and more. I charge 500 for an hour and 700 for 1.5-2 hours. But these are not the highest tutoring rates.
Tutoring is considered a type of business, which means that the tutor must pay taxes. However, the vast majority of tutors do not do this, that is, they work illegally. And school teachers, for example, are generally prohibited from tutoring. But that's in theory.
