"I gave birth to you, I will kill you," - such was Bulba's last phrase at the moment of reprisal against his youngest son for betrayal. This was the last feat of Taras Bulba. The enemies caught him, but he did not lose his pride and honor and met his death with dignity. When Taras was burned at the stake, he already felt the approach of imminent death, but at the same time he looked at his Cossacks, fleeing from the Poles, and shouted: “Boys, to the shore!”

And for the third and last time the author mentions his mother in his story. Before Ostap and Andriy left for long way mother couldn't deal with it. She was disappointed and broken because she saw so little of her beloved sons.

All night, the loving mother sat next to the beds of Ostap and Andriy, not taking her eyes off them. On the morning of the journey, she blessed them and asked them not to forget, to send news and letters.

The moon from the heights of the sky had long been illuminating the whole yard filled with sleeping people, a thick bunch of willows and high weeds, in which the palisade surrounding the yard sank. She kept sitting in the heads of her dear sons, did not take her eyes off them for a minute and did not think about sleep. Already the horses, smelling the dawn, all lay down on the grass and stopped eating; the upper leaves of the willows began to murmur, and little by little the murmuring stream descended down them to the very bottom. She sat up until daylight, was not at all tired, and wished inwardly that the night would last as long as possible. Bulba suddenly woke up and jumped up. He remembered very well everything he ordered yesterday.

- Well, lads, sleep well! It's time, it's time! Drink the horses! Where is old? (So he used to call his wife.) Quickly, old woman, prepare us to eat; the path is great!

The poor old woman, deprived of her last hope, dejectedly trudged into the hut. While she, with tears, was preparing everything that was needed for breakfast, Bulba was giving out his orders, fiddling around in the stable, and himself choosing the best decorations for his children. Kazakin of scarlet color, cloth bright as fire, was girded with a patterned belt; chased Turkish pistols were pushed into the belt; the saber rattled at his feet. Their faces, still slightly tanned, seemed to have grown prettier and whiter; the young black mustache now somehow more vividly set off their whiteness and the healthy, powerful color of youth; they were good under black ramskin caps with gold tops. As soon as the poor mother saw them, she could not utter a word, and the tears stopped in her eyes.

- Well, sons, everything is ready! nothing to delay! said Bulba at last. “Now, according to Christian custom, everyone needs to sit down in front of the road.

Everyone sat down, not even turning off the lads who stood respectfully at the door.

“Now bless your children, mother!” Bulba said. “Pray to God that they would fight bravely, that they would always defend the knightly honor, that they would always stand for the faith of Christ, otherwise, it would be better if they perished, so that their spirit would not be in the world!” Come, children, to the mother: a mother's prayer saves both on water and on earth.

The mother, weak as a mother, embraced them, took out two small icons, put them on, weeping, around their necks.

“May God protect you… Mother of God… Don’t forget, sons, your mother… send at least news about yourself…” She could not speak further.

- Well, let's go, children! Bulba said.

Saddled horses stood at the porch. Bulba jumped on his Devil, who recoiled furiously, feeling a twenty-pound burden on him, because Taras was extremely heavy and fat.

When the mother saw that her sons had already mounted horses, she rushed to the smaller one, whose facial features expressed more than some kind of tenderness: she grabbed him by the stirrup, she stuck to his saddle and, with despair in her eyes, did not let him out of their hands. Two burly Cossacks took her carefully and carried her into the hut. But when they rode out the gate, she, with all the lightness of a wild goat, incongruous with her years, ran out the gate, stopped the horse with incomprehensible strength, and embraced one of her sons with a kind of mad, insensible ardor; she was taken away again.
