Hobbits are a cheerful, but at the same time solid little people. They are just like people, only half as tall as us, and their legs are overgrown with hair, and they do not live in houses, but in "burrows" - comfortable dwellings dug in the ground. Their country is called the Shire, and both people and elves settle around it - very similar to people, but noble and immortal. And long-bearded gnomes, masters of stone and metal, live in the mountains. Well, our hobbit's name is Bilbo Baggins; he is a wealthy middle-aged hobbit, foodie and songwriter. One fine day, his friend, the kind and powerful wizard Gandalf, passing him off as a professional thief, sends thirteen dwarves to him to help the dwarves take away their treasures from the fire-breathing dragon. Many years ago, a dragon captured their cave city and lay there on a pile of jewels; it is not known how to get close to it, and the road to the distant mountains is difficult and dangerous, it is guarded by goblins and giant trolls. And even worse, these ferocious and infinitely cruel creatures obey the powerful ruler of the Dark Kingdom, the enemy of all that is good and bright.

Why did the wizard send gentle Bilbo on such a dangerous journey? It seems that the hobbits are chosen by providence to fight the Dark Kingdom - but this will open much later, but for now the expedition led by Gandalf sets off. The dwarves and the hobbit almost die when they meet the trolls; Gandalf saves them by turning the robbers to stone, but the next ambush in the goblin cave is much more dangerous. Twice, thrice the ferocious goblins attack the company, the dwarves flee the dungeon, leaving Bilbo unconscious in the dark.

This is where it starts real story, which will be continued in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Poor Bilbo wakes up and crawls along the tunnel on all fours, not knowing where. His hand comes across a cold object - a metal ring, and he mechanically puts it in his pocket. Crawls further and gropes for water. Here, on an island in the middle of an underground lake, already long years Gollum lives - a two-legged creature the size of a hobbit, with huge luminous eyes and flipper-like legs. Gollum eats fish; sometimes he manages to catch a goblin. Having examined Bilbo in the darkness, he swims up to the hobbit on a boat, they get to know each other. Alas, Bilbo says his name ... Gollum would like to eat Bilbo, but he is armed with a sword, and they start playing riddles: if the hobbit wins, Gollum leads him to the exit from the dungeon. It turns out they both love puzzles. Bilbo wins, but not entirely fair, by asking "What's in my pocket?"

The ring in his pocket was lost by Gollum. This is a magical Ring of power, the creation of the lord of the Dark Kingdom, but neither Gollum nor Bilbo knows about it. Gollum knows only that he loves "his charm" more than anything else and that by putting it on his finger, he becomes invisible and can hunt goblins. Having discovered the loss, Gollum in a rage rushes at Bilbo, and he, running away, accidentally puts on the Ring. Becomes invisible, eludes Gollum and catches up with his company.

They move on towards the mountains. Giant eagles, friends of the wizard, save them from the goblin chase, soon after that Gandalf leaves the dwarves and Bilbo - he has his own affairs, and without him the company gets into trouble over and over again. Either they are almost eaten by giant spiders, or they are captured by forest elves, and every time Bilbo rescues everyone: he puts on a ring and becomes invisible. Truly a homebody hobbit turned out to be a godsend for the dwarves... Finally, after many adventures, the company climbs into the mountains, to the lost possessions of the dwarves, and begins to look for a secret door leading to the dungeon.

/ / / "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again"

Date of creation: 1937.

Genre: fairy tale.

Subject: confrontation between good and evil.

Idea: the victory of good over evil is a foregone conclusion, although it comes at a high price in a hard struggle.

Issues. Passion for wealth and overcoming it.

Main heroes: the hobbit Bilbo Baggins, the wise wizard Gandalf, the dwarf king Thorin.

Plot. Hobbits are good-natured, cheerful and very economic people. Outwardly, they are very similar to people, but half as tall and the shins of their legs are covered with wool. Instead of houses for living, they adapted "burrows" that were dug in the ground. In these "burrows" everything is very thoroughly equipped for life. The village of hobbits is called Shire, people and elves live around it. Elves are similar to people, but they are characterized by fabulous beauty, spiritual nobility and immortality. The mountains are inhabited by bearded gnomes, unsurpassed masters of working with precious stones and metal.

The protagonist of the book is the hobbit Bilbo Baggins. He is middle-aged, lives in abundance, loves to compose songs. Once Bilbo was visited by the magician Gandalf the Gray, he noticed that this hobbit has an adventurous beginning (love of adventure). A friendly relationship was established between the hobbit and the wizard. And once, quite unexpectedly for Bilbo, a band of gnomes appeared to him, led by the fugitive king Thorin Oakenshield. It turns out that Gandalf recommended that the dwarves take Bilbo with them on a campaign. The purpose of the campaign is to return the lost kingdom of the dwarves of Erebor. This kingdom fell under the rule of the fire-breathing dragon Smaug.

Bilbo at first did not agree to keep the dwarves company, but suddenly he decided and went with the dwarves as a scout. The path was long and dangerous, he led through the mountains, the kingdom of goblins, who almost ate them. The travelers survived the attack of the evil orcs, they managed to escape from the wargs - huge wolves. The path of the heroes lay through an inhospitable forest, where they were attacked by spiders of incredible size. Thanks to Bilbo's ingenuity and the magical power of Gandalf, the dwarves get out of all the troubles and follow on. The wood elves escorted the whole warm company to prison for violating the elven borders, but all the captives escaped safely.

While still in trouble with the goblins, lagging behind his comrades and getting lost in mountain caves, the hobbit stumbled upon a ring, which he unconsciously put into his pocket. Here, on the shore of an underground lake, he meets a disgusting and incomprehensible creature named Gollum. He has become wild from the loneliness of underground life, his food is fish and carrion. Gollum had a clear intention of feasting on Bilbo. But the hobbit is armed with an elven sword, and one has to play riddles with it. According to the condition, the winner Bilbo Gollum will indicate the way out of the cave. The savvy hobbit wins, but Gollum, furious at the loss of the ring and suspecting Bilbo of the theft, rushes at him. But Bilbo slips away, wearing a ring on his finger that makes him invisible, and finds a way out. Neither Gollum nor Bilbo suspect that this is the ring of omnipotence, created by the lord of the dark kingdom.

The detachment approached the goal - to the Lonely Mountain, where Erebor is located. Bilbo got inside the mountain, disturbed the dragon. Smaug did not find the one who dared to enter his domain, because Bilbo was invisible under the effect of the ring. An angry dragon flew out of its lair and attacked Lake City. But Bard the Archer strikes him with an arrow, knowing about the weak spot on the dragon's stomach. Meanwhile, the Dwarves enter Erebor and take possession of all the treasures. However, the affected citizens demand compensation for the damage caused at the gates of Erebor. Elven warriors also appear here. The dwarves are strengthening the defense, a battle is brewing. But circumstances change with the advent of a myriad of orcs who also need wealth. A new threat unites humans, elves and dwarves. The orc attack is repulsed, but this event is overshadowed by the death of Thorin.

Bilbo at the end of the story is dressed up with a part of the treasure, goes to his Shire and again lives a calm, measured life and writes about his adventures.

And he keeps the ring of omnipotence.

Review of the product. The book is very special, not like the others. The author has created a special world filled with bright heroes and interesting characters. Adventures capture, the book is positive, charges with optimism, makes you want to re-read.

They search for a long time, unsuccessfully, until Bilbo, on a whim, discovers the entrance.
The time has come to go inside, to explore, and the cautious dwarves want Bilbo to do this, promise him a rich share of the booty - and he goes. Not because of money, I think, but because of the craving for adventure that has awakened in him.
... In the darkness of the dungeon, a crimson light glows. A huge, reddish-gold dragon lies in a cave on piles of treasure, snoring, emitting smoke from its nostrils. He sleeps, and a brave hobbit steals a huge golden bowl. There is no limit to the delight of the gnomes, but the dragon, having discovered the loss, in a rage burns out the surroundings of their camp, kills their ponies ... What to do?
Bilbo climbs into the cave again, starts - from a safe hiding place - a conversation with the dragon and cunningly finds out that the monster's diamond shell has a hole in the chest. And when he tells the dwarves about it, the wise old thrush hears him.
Meanwhile, the dragon is furious at the hobbit's importunate harassment. He takes to the air again to burn the only human city left at the foot of the mountains. But there he is struck with a black arrow by Bard, the captain of the archers, a descendant of the kings of this country: the wise thrush managed to retell the words of Bilbo to the captain.
The events don't end there. The absurd leader of the dwarves quarrels with Bilbo, Bard and even Gandalf over trifles, it almost comes to a battle, but at this time the invasion of goblins and werewolves begins. Humans, elves and dwarves unite against them and win the battle. Bilbo finally goes home to the Shire, refusing the promised fourteenth share of the treasure of the dwarves - to transport such wealth, it would take a whole caravan and an army to guard it. He takes away on a pony two chests with gold and silver, and from now on he can live and live in perfect contentment.
And with him remains the Ring of Power.

The author of the book is the English writer John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, also known for a number of other works that together make up one big universe: The Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, The Children of Hurin, and many others. Despite the fact that they were written at the beginning of the 20th century, they still have not lost their relevance. They are read by many to this day. "The Hobbit" ("Travel back and forth") is only a small part of the huge legendarium, which is striking in its scale. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that all this could be invented by one person.

"The Hobbit, or There and Back Again": a summary

The book tells about how a small creature - a hobbit by name - lives peacefully and calmly in his mink in Hobbitania, in a village called Shire. One day, a powerful magician named Gandalf the Gray (who is one of the key figures in Tolkien's universe) comes to visit him. He saw in the young hobbit a craving for adventure and travel. A friendship developed between them. And one day a detachment of dwarves comes to Bilbo's doorstep, led by the fugitive king Gandalf persuaded the dwarves to take him on their campaign without Bilbo's knowledge. The goal was to return the lost kingdom of the Dwarves of Erebor, which was captured by the evil dragon Smaug.

At first Bilbo was indignant and flatly refused to take part in this matter. However, he unexpectedly agreed and took on the role of a scout and scout. The heroes set off on a long and dangerous journey. First they went through the mountains, where they were almost eaten by goblins who had a kingdom there. They were attacked by evil creatures - orcs. After that, they are saved from giant wolves - wargs. They pass the forest, in which they are waiting. However, thanks to the abilities of the magician and the ingenuity of Bilbo, the detachment always gets out of any trouble. The heroes even escape from the wood elf prison, where they are imprisoned for crossing the elven border without asking.

Wandering through the caves in the mountains, the hobbit finds a small ring, which he puts in his pocket without hesitation. Bilbo meets a strange creature - Gollum, who leads a wild life and eats fish and carrion. It wants to kill and eat Bilbo, but instead the heroes play riddles, and if the hobbit wins, Gollum will show him the way out of the cave. Bilbo wins, and it turns out that the ring can make anyone invisible. Gollum previously owned it, so he thinks Bilbo stole the ring and tries to find it. But Bilbo is already invisible and has found a way out.

Here is the squad and the goal. Bilbo enters Erebor, which is located in the Lonely Mountain, but the dragon wakes up without finding a scout (after all, Bilbo had a ring), leaves the mountain and attacks the nearest city - Ozerny. However, one of its inhabitants - Bard the Archer - kills Smaug by hitting him with a large arrow in an unprotected place on his stomach. At this time, the dwarves penetrate into Erebor and return it to themselves, appropriating all the treasures stored there.

But the inhabitants of the city want to receive compensation for their losses, so they go to the gates of Erebor, hoping to take part of the treasure for themselves. The squad of elves also fits there. Thorin, seeing this, calls to himself all the dwarves who once lived in Erebor and were saved during the dragon's attack on the kingdom. They build defenses and prepare for battle. But it begins differently - a large army of orcs approaches the mountain, who, having learned about the death of the dragon, also wanted to take the wealth for themselves. Humans, elves and dwarves unite against new threat and repulse the attack of the orcs, but Thorin dies in battle.

Bilbo after these events receives part of the treasure, returns home with Gandalf and continues to live the same life. He writes a book about his adventures, which will later be called Ala.

This is how you can convey summary. "The Hobbit, or There and Back Again" is a dynamic book, full of many events that change each other, like in a kaleidoscope, but there is no discomfort when reading, since the author managed to harmoniously put them together.

The meaning of the work

At its core, the first part of Tolkien's series of works on the fictional world of Middle-earth is precisely The Hobbit, or There and Back Again. The book was successfully filmed by director Peter Jackson, who had previously filmed a trilogy based on another Tolkien work - The Lord of the Rings. The film, which was also made into a trilogy, was successful and grossed millions of dollars at the box office. What is the secret of such popularity of seemingly ordinary fantasy, which is now a dime a dozen?

What is a good book?

A brief summary ("The Hobbit, or There and Back Again"), of course, does not describe all the delights of the book. Tolkien attracts the reader's attention in many ways. First, it is inexhaustible optimism. The book is easy and pleasant to read, it is saturated with positive, and therefore, even despite the troubles of the characters, there is confidence that everything will be fine. Secondly, the characters' personalities turned out to be quite interesting, and each of them can be perceived almost as a native. Thirdly, Tolkien managed to create a unique and inimitable universe, in which there are so many mysterious and unknown things that sometimes goosebumps run down your skin.

In fact, Tolkien launched a whole generation of young writers, artists and other artists who were largely inspired by his works. Therefore, the writer's contribution to the development of modern literature and art in general is difficult to overestimate.

Universe of Tolkien

Of course, a summary cannot give a complete picture of the author's works. The Hobbit, or There and Back Again is only part of the diverse and multifaceted world created by Tolkien, and one book will not be enough to fully understand the events. Therefore, it is worth reading other works, especially since they are all written in a very high level. There are so many places, regions, creatures and wonders in Tolkien's world that it will appeal to both beginners and people familiar with the fantasy genre more thoroughly.

Heroes of the book

The main characters are the hobbit Bilbo, the magician Gandalf and the dwarf king Thorin Oakenshield. The characters are quite different, in many ways they make this interesting book"The Hobbit, or There and Back Again". Briefly describe each character:

  • Bilbo is simple-hearted, but at the same time smart, resourceful and loyal. He never let the detachment down during the entire campaign, for which Thorin appreciated him, although at first there was a misunderstanding between them.
  • Gandalf is a classic image of a wise wizard. He is kind, but at the same time fair and stern, always comes to the rescue. In addition, he knows a lot about the world, which has saved the squad more than once.
  • Thorin, as befits a king, albeit a fugitive, is powerful, strict, fair. He is brave, for which he won the respect of his people, moreover, he is the only heir to the royal dynasty of Erebor.
