The role of English in the modern world. The relevance of learning English. The role of English in the lives of modern schoolchildren What role does English play in our lives

INTRODUCTION

Relevance of the problem The socio-economic development of modern society is characterized by intensive connections with other peoples and states.

Today there is no need to argue about the role and significance of the English language in human life. Enterprises are entering into a new form of cooperation - their direct connections with foreign partners are being established, and joint research, design and experimental work is being carried out. For these purposes, joint teams of scientists and specialists are being created. It is increasingly obvious that it is advisable to send specialists who speak a foreign language to work abroad. This will help you learn about the country, industry, and enterprise.

Foreign language as an academic subject occupies an important place in the school education of young people

Currently, a large role is given to computerization and informatization of society, which also requires knowledge of foreign languages. A foreign language enriches our horizons with information on history, geography, literature, art, music, and introduces us to the life of the countries of the language being studied.

Wherever you find yourself on the globe, you will probably hear English spoken everywhere. The relevance of the choice of topic is due to the fact that English is popular all over the world as the global language of the world community. Already today, English occupies a very special position and is becoming a lingua franca - the language of interethnic communication of all mankind. But half a century ago, English was just one of the international languages, along with others, accepted among the languages of communication in the United Nations.

"By students, professionals, teachers, officials in most countries

there is a need for materials and technical means in English,” says Charles Wick, director of the United States Information Agency (USIA).

CHAPTERII

THE ROLE OF ENGLISH IN THE LIFE OF MODERN PEOPLE

SCHOOLCHILDREN AND STUDENTS

To find out the role of the English language in the lives of schoolchildren and students around the world, we used materials from various Internet forums devoted to the attitude of young people to the study of foreign languages in general and the English language in particular. CONCLUSIONS ONCHAPTER II

At the end of the second chapter, I would like to quote a joke we found on the website www. . english. seteclub. ru, why pessimists, realists and optimists learn English:

PESSIMISTS

1. Foresight: English is a lifeline that can come in handy in critical life situations; This is a reserve that is clearly useful for survival in today's rapidly changing world.

2. Taking care of children: make sure that your children or grandchildren are not left without work in 5-10-15 years, when without knowledge of at least one foreign language - English - job applications will not even be considered.

3. To increase self-esteem: some study karate, others study English. What do you think is more important in a conflict situation - the ability to fight or the ability to explain yourself and avoid a fight?

REALISTS

4. A perceived vital necessity: more employment options and, as a rule, higher wages, all other things being equal.

5. To obtain a profession in demand: there are professions that require fluency in foreign languages, and primarily English: translators (guide-interpreter, literary translator, simultaneous interpreter), etc.

6. For offshore employment - programmers, web designers, telemarketers (for example, in India, Citigroup, Dell, etc. have already opened more than remote jobs and thousands of new jobs are opening every month).

7. Responsible parents who want to take care of the future of their children. It is known that learning a foreign language, including English, provides powerful brain development in children under 6 years of age.

8. Loving children who take care of their elderly parents: the latest research has proven that learning foreign languages, and English too, in adulthood is an excellent prevention of sclerosis and Alzheimer's disease and helps to prolong active longevity.

OPTIMISTS

9. Lovers of travel: in order to get to know other cultures better and have the opportunity to travel even without an interpreter.

10. Brides and grooms: those who want to significantly expand their choice when searching for their “soul mate.”

11. Businessmen who want to enter international markets. As you know, English is the language of business.

12. Those wishing to improve their social status: fluency in foreign languages has raised social status at all times. For example, a man of science in the Middle Ages must have mastered Latin; Russian nobles communicated freely in French and English, etc. And now English is held in high esteem in our country.

13. Those who want to stand out from the competition and get an additional chance for success in life: victory or defeat in high-level beauty contests (Miss Universe, Miss World, etc.) often depends on proficiency in English; top models are required to speak English; an athlete will attract more media attention to his person if he can give an interview in English, not to mention the language of the country where the competition is taking place;

14. The opportunity to study at foreign universities around the world for prestigious professions: spoken English in addition to a good profession gives many advantages to residents of different countries of the world.

15. All diplomats are required to speak English: in one of his interviews, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Yakovenko stated that a Russian diplomat should, as a rule, know two languages. "But many people know more. However, there is an unwritten rule. Among them should be English," he said.

CHAPTERIII

THE ROLE OF ENGLISH IN THE LIFE OF STUDENTS

Municipal budgetary educational institution "Elizavetinskaya secondary school"

In our study, we tried to analyze trends in the prestige of the English language within our educational institution. Since English is a school subject, we surveyed 102 students from our school to find out how interesting this subject is for them and what role it plays in their lives.

For this purpose, students were given the questionnaire “The role of English in my life.” In grades 5-6, the questionnaire was offered in Russian, in grades 7-11 - in English (texts of the questionnaires can be found in Appendix 4).

The results were summed up for three age groups: grades 5-7 (53 students), grades 8-9 (34 students), grades 10-11 (15 students).

In the age group 5-7 grades the most popular answers were: learning a language for a future profession (64%), using the Internet (26%), communicating with foreign friends (19%), watching satellite programs (19%), reading books in the original (19% ).

Analyzing the data obtained, we came to the conclusion that in grades 5-7, learning a foreign language is of a practical nature. Students will learn English by listening to the songs of their favorite singer or reading an article about their favorite movie. Since communication is the main thing at this age, students prefer to communicate not only with their friends, but also with peers from other countries, and the Internet can help them with this.

In the age group of 8-9 grades the most popular answers were: learning a language for a future profession (41%), using the Internet (29%), communicating with foreign friends (21%), listening to popular music (18%), 21% have difficulty answering questions questionnaires.

The data obtained show that in grades 8-9, learning a foreign language is partly practical in nature. Like students in grades 5-7, students in this group will learn English in order to watch movies, listen to music, read in the original, actively use the Internet, and find pen pals.

At the same time, most students associate knowledge of English with their future profession, as Russia is integrating into the world community, so the process of mastering English for making contacts becomes most relevant.

However, it is alarming that 21% of students find it difficult to determine the role of English in their lives. This may be due both to the lack of sustainable motivation to learn the language, and to the fact that students have not fully decided on their future profession.

In the age group of 10-11 grades the most popular answers were: learning a language for a future profession (53%), using the Internet (33%), listening to popular music (27%).

The graph shows that in this age group, the majority of students associate knowledge of English with their future profession, which is not obvious, since most of the students have decided on their choice of profession. In addition, at present, most universities have included a foreign language in the list of entrance exams. Therefore, it is important for students to search for information in a foreign language, assignments, and measurement materials from various sources, including the Internet.

CONCLUSIONS ONCHAPTER III

Summarizing what was said in the third chapter, we note that:

Firstly, knowing English, we can receive more information from various media, this could be your computer, where all technical information is written in English, computer programs, by the way, are also written in English even in Russia, you can also read books in the original context, the translation does not always objectively reflect the true feelings and emotions that the author put into the novel.
Secondly, you will now always have the opportunity to talk with interesting people on a wide variety of topics in English, and besides, you can always travel abroad as a tourist, which is much more convenient and cheaper.

Thirdly, if you dream of a career, then you need English like air, especially if you dream of being an international businessman. All international negotiations, trading on stock exchanges are all conducted in English, you will have to take part in international conferences, communicate with business people, read international magazines and newspapers about business.

Fourthly, everyone has a hobby - everyone has their own, but every person loves music and song - this is not a secret. And knowing English, you will always know exactly what your favorite singer is singing. What about films? In this case, you also won’t need a translator at all. What about the Internet? This is a bottomless ocean of information - but most of the most necessary information is in English.

Fifthly, thanks to the English language, you can also earn some good money by translating texts not only for your friends, but also open your own agency for translating various literature from English into Russian and vice versa.

Sixthly, someone, having studied English perfectly, will be able to give lessons.
In general, it turns out that everyone can find a reason to learn English - the main thing is to decide why it is needed.

CONCLUSION

The world does not stand still; it is constantly improving, new discoveries are appearing, and the latest technologies are being developed. And therefore, it is very important to have a world language in which figures from different countries and nationalities can communicate. Today this language is English. A good command of the English language is more important today than ever before. In a world that is becoming increasingly international, it is vital to find common ground with representatives of other countries. English is the language of international communication and its knowledge makes it possible to accept and cope with all the changes occurring in the world.
Proficiency in English is one of the keys to success in life, it allows you to rise to a higher level, embrace wider areas of communication, get acquainted with the national characteristics of the culture and traditions of the people of other countries, penetrate into areas of activity where a society of highly qualified specialists turns, thereby enriching your knowledge and intellectual abilities, making your life interesting and varied.

In the modern world, knowledge of English is the norm for active and purposeful people. If you can communicate fluently in English, this will greatly expand your life prospects.

Among the important conditions for a successful professional career, knowledge of foreign languages is not the least important. Proficiency in English makes an employee competitive in the labor market. Heads of prestigious organizations give greater preference to employees who speak English, which opens the way to career growth.

Highly qualified workers who speak world languages have always been and will be valued. Today it is not enough to be a specialist in only one area, since society mercilessly demands from a person further development and improvement, otherwise he will simply settle at the very bottom of human development.

The transition from an industrial society to a post-industrial information society determines the importance of the comprehensive development of communication skills among future specialists. The modern world is based on the latest technologies that require knowledge of the English language. The formation of communicative competence is the main goal of language learning.

Computerization of all types of work requires greater knowledge of English among users. Most types of computer programs intended for the further growth of the enterprise, and in general the entire economy of the country, are created in English, which is directly reflected in the labor market: the demand for workers skilled in the field of computer technology and fluent in English is increasing. This method of communicating with people from different countries and obtaining the latest and most complete information on the Internet also requires users to know English.

To summarize, we can say that in the modern world, a person striving for career growth, for broader communication, for obtaining the latest information from various sources, for expanding his life prospects and, finally, simply for a more interesting and varied life, needs knowledge English, although this process is by no means an easy one, but requires perseverance, patience and, most importantly, the desire to achieve one’s goal, and if there is a desire, there will be a result.

English on the world map

EN-US">I study English because it has become a challenge of my life and I have accepted getting command over English as a challenge. I may sound weird but fact is that in the modern world, life is too small and limited without English English is the language of dreams of modern day society. I also dream and want to realize them. One may agree or not, reality is that realization of them is a very distant thing, you cannot even tell about your dreams to society, if you do not know English. English certifies your knowledge, breaks barriers and makes you far more acceptable. I want society to know that I also have some dreams; I want appreciation of people whose appreciation I really crave for; and I want the system to recognize me. And, to bring all these things in my reach, I have to learn English and am determined to learn it.

Prashant Singh,India

It is difficult to explain why you do something you like! At first I studied English, because it was school program. All my classmates have done it and I have done the same. When I have entered the university, I have had the opportunity to see a lot of people of other nationalities and from other countries. And I could not suppose how it is interesting to learn foreign language with guys from different countries. Bright pictures come to life from pages of textbooks. And you can get to know something what for other person perceives as the most usual, as the part of its own culture.

And finally at the end of my education at the university, I was in the EC school of Malta on the summer vacation. It was the most unusual impression in my life. Here you can associate with the students from almost all Europe and see traditions of the country with your own eyes. Here, at last, I have understood, that the knowledge of English means, that you will be understood in any corner of the world.

Nowadays a lot of people say that they need to know English as a necessity for their future or present career. It's partly the truth. For me it is originally important to know English to understand people.., because people work in those or other companies, create culture of the country and is even more global - its history. If you will receive a key to understanding of people and it will be your key to understanding of a life. And one of such keys for me is English.

Kate Fendrikova, Russian Federation

English is spoken as native language in Great Britain, in the United States of America, New Zealand, Canada, countries I would like to visit some day in my life (and many other people would like too, I believe) and I have to be able to understand their inhabitants. To laugh with them, have fun, share interests. In many other countries, people learn English as their second language. So knowing it can help and in non English speaking countries as well. Everywhere you go; English is like a connection between people of different nationalities, ages, and genders. In the past years, I made some valuable friendships on the internet with very interesting people from all over the world, thanks to this beautiful language. You can also study in any country you want, because English is almost like an official language at all universities and schools. English opens the door to a good job as many major companies are searching for employers with good communication skills-in English. If someone thinks about himself as an educated person, he must be able to understand, speak, think, and feel in English language. At the end, my conclusion is:English – connects you with the world.

Radmila Curcic, Serbia

First of all, as you know, English is a very common language all over the world. From the point of view of numbers of native English speakers, there are not so many. However if you can speak/understand English, at least you can communicate with many people from different countries. What is more, these days, the internet is going to be common in all countries. Also, a lot of website is written in English. Therefore it is useful for their business and other things obviously that you can understand and get some information from the internet.
In addition, the greatest thing what I believe is meeting people from all over the world so I am trying to travel everywhere as much as I can. Then, I believe English is the best tool to contact people from other countries. Of course it is quit difficult to learn all languages, and then we need the same language to have a conversation together. This is the biggest reason for me to learn English.
On the other hand, it is also important to learn other languages as well, not only English because in trying to know language is that we get to know its culture at the same time. All in all, I believe English is the most useful language if you want to touch the world; English helps you in a lot of ways such as in communication, in a business, in your experiences and so on. I would like to keep studying English and other languages in my whole life.

Yours faithfully,

Junko Kubo

Want to learn English because is depends on what is your goal, whether you want to speak it fluently, no matter what your writing and grammar is, or just to be able to get in contact with others but focusing on your grammar. If I were a teacher, I would definitely try to teach my students everything I know emphasizing every aspect of English language - speaking, writing, listening, grammar (use of English). The most important thing is to use your English as much as you can. You have to think in English, dream in English, live English!!! The best way to improve your speaking English is to speak it with someone whose native language is English and to use it in every circumstance, in a restaurant, in a shop, in a theater and in the street. The important factor is just to listen to others when they are speaking English. You need to study grammar and learn by heart all the necessary definitions and rules about English grammar and to exercise writing by doing as much homework as you can. Also, I think that reading English novels is a way to improve English and that is also the way you can learn something new about other cultures and countries. In short: just use your English!

Why I study English?

It seems an easy question but it is difficult to answer this question. Well, I’ve studied English for 8 years when I was 14 years old. I study English because I want to go abroad, meet people who come from different country and learn about their culture. I want to go to USA to study law because now I am a student at Hanoi Law University in Vietnam. Nowadays English is very popular in the world and if you don"t know English you will feel very difficult to do anything like read a book or use the computer...because many books and programs are written by English. Most of people in the world are studying English and why am I don"t. That's why I study English.

Tongue Thang, Vietnam

Hello!
My name is Elena. I study English, because I want to work in UK. I need IELTS. I want to see a Tower, a green grass even in December, the British cats and two-storied buses. I would like to live and work there. That is why it is important for me to study English. I do not understand how it is possible to win in this competition if you will write not the truth! I will tell the truth - to write 300 words for me in English is very difficult, but for win Thus I have tried to write about 100 words.

Thank you.

Elena Ryazantseva, Russia.

The English Language has the richest vocabulary I ever know. There are an astonishing number of words to express anything you could imagine. It means that there will be a whole new range of possibilities to describe things, feelings and thoughts. It does fascinate me because I can use it to read the world through different perspectives and I can re-write it myself. English is an international language today and be able to speak it is fundamental to communicate to the world we live in. Sharing ideas beyond country lines to change our planet to a place where we all can be friends.

Welma Pereira,Brazil

My dream about Britain has grown as from the summer of 2007. We all cousins, my relatives were together in our summer house's garden for lunch and my uncle told me that assuming I can"t learn English fluently until 2008, he will get angry with me because of my irresponsibility. He always says to us provided we learn English firstly, we would earn lots of money and have a good life standard.

Also then I have to learn business English, because I have been studying law at university. Lots of reports and research are prepared by us in a term. All you know that it is not easy to find a real agreement between countries which are written in Turkish on the Internet.

Actually my main dream about my future life would be challenging and relaxed. I know you will ask me now in your mind if I am crazy. No, not yet. I can be challenging person if I feel someone tries to race me. Something can happen like balls which are in my stomach. Why did I tell you this symptom? I want you to know how I feel when I study English.

Of course not that’s all. I"ll tell you one of my stories in the last summer.

I and my mum had been on the bus from Bodrum to Izmir, couples of tourists who were all guys rode on. They looked like American and talking so much, but I couldn't understand what they talked about! It drives me crazy! This is characteristic for Turkish people who wonder about other people's life. What are they talking about? Do they like Turkish men and women? Can they understand when we are speaking Turkish about them?

I hope I can tell you why it is so important for me. I am looking forward to coming there to make real the first aim for my education.

Derya Canitez,Turkey

I am a teacher of English at a school in Sofia, Bulgaria. Many non-native speaking teachers who only work in their own country are qualified with the relevant teaching qualification of that country. I am considering taking a teacher refreshment course, and have been told that one of the EC Schools, in Malta is eligible for the EU Lifelong learning programmed funds. The refreshment teaching course is to lead to the internationally accredited TEFL Certificate, for which though I have to put some extra efforts to be eligible to apply for.

Having read the TEFL - Course requirements, for candidates whose mother tongue is not English and the must to have the mastery level in English, I regret to accept I only achieved the B2 level so far(Pitman ESOL Qualifications).

I want to study at EC Cambridge, and I am applying the competition, for I would be happy to win the two free weeks" English language course – it will be much of a help to me, otherwise I cannot afford it.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Svetla Mavrodieva, Bulgaria

The English language is one of the most important languages. It is the third most spoken in the world. English is the most used by people from different countries to be able to understand each other. So, English can be used in a lot of situations. For instance, an international business has a lot of enterprises in different countries. Therefore, when they need something about one company in another country, they talk in English because it is the known language by everyone. Another situation is about international student programmers. For example, we can focus on Erasmus program. In this scholarship, a lot of people go abroad to live in a foreign country where English is one of the most important things to survive. It is used to communicate with the Erasmus students from other nationalities, to be connected with people from that country when they have to buy things, to ask information and so on. In this way, English is an essential thing which is required to apply in these programmers. Thus, people who can speak English have more knowledge about other culture, other people, a lot of interesting experience, etc. And on the other hand they are more independent because they can travel where they want without any problem about the idiom and they can solve any difficulty by themselves. In conclusion, English is not just an important language, but it is the key which opens many doors both in the professional and the personal life.

Alvaro Garrido,Spain

English is important to learn because:

I think only several centuries ago not many people knew the English language, but time has changed and now English is one of the most spoken languages in the world and one of the most frequent foreign languages that people learn. English is spoken as native language in Britain, the USA, Australia, New Zealand, part of Canada. In many countries learn English as their second language. In many countries English is a compulsory part of school curriculum.

English dominates world trade, tourism; it"s a language of many scientific conferences.
Every educated person should know English; it opens the door to a good job and communication with other people from different countries.

Learning to speak English well may be the best thing I can do to improve my life.
I like to call English "the language of communication". Why? Because it seems all the people in the world have agreed to use English to talk to each other. If I can communicate in English, I can talk about my ideas and opinions on Internet discussion groups. Send e-mail to interesting people. Learn about their life and culture.

I think English is the language of technology, especially high technology like computer science, genetics, and medicine. If you"re going to read about technology, you"ll probably have to do it in English.

Thanks & Regards,

Murtada Hussein Siddig, Republic of Sudan.

Learning the English Language in this very challenging world is really important for non English speakers. whether we like it or not, It can"t be denied that the English language is the most widespread in the world and in all fields. So, as nowadays we talk about globalization, communication through the internet, and or by satellite, watch all T.V. and listen all all kind of radios, read news papers, meet someone who speak English in most of all countries. English is an international language. As for myself, I learn the English language, first to be able to communicate with people who can" t speak my language, second, to know JESUS CHRIST by using the internet and listening to some international preaching. And finally to have a good job in my own country or out of my country in the case I don't find any.

Today, foreign languages are becoming widespread and highly important. A few years ago, the school curriculum was not as complex as it is today; previously, children studied one foreign language (most often English or German), today - two or even three. In specialized educational institutions, children study according to a more intensive program. Why has attention to knowledge of other languages grown so much in recent decades? What is the reason for this demand? The English language has acquired international significance; it is popular in almost all civilized and developed countries of the world. Therefore, the main attention is focused on it. However, modern society also shows great interest in other languages; more and more people of different age categories are beginning to attend classes to study Italian, Spanish, French, German and Polish.

Foreign language – a fashion trend or an everyday necessity?

Each person is guided by his own specific principles in forming his outlook on life. Some people don’t want to change anything and strive for better, while others spend all their free time on self-education, deciding to study/improve their existing knowledge in one of the foreign languages. The most popular types of motivation are:

Job

Most modern specialties require employees to have deep knowledge of international languages. New innovative technologies and methods most often have an English description; most modern methodological literature is also written in a foreign language. Often good, well-paid jobs are available in international companies. You need to be able to put your existing vocabulary into practice and construct sentences correctly (grammatically and stylistically). A company employee who is fluent in several languages can qualify for a higher level of income. In addition, representatives of top management must have a high level of knowledge of foreign languages in order to be able to conduct a dialogue with partners, hold an international meeting at a decent level, organize a master class or discuss prospects, as well as possible problems and difficulties.

Studies

Among young people, the exchange student program, known as Work and Travel, is of increased interest. After many qualifying rounds and lengthy discussions among the teaching staff, several applicants are selected and given the opportunity to go to study abroad, and their places will be taken by foreign students.

Emigration

Do you have a chance to radically change your life and go to work/study abroad? Don’t want to feel like a black sheep in another country, in a new company, in an unfamiliar team? It is for such cases that good knowledge of a foreign language of an international type will be needed.

Trips

Are you familiar with the phrases: “Excuse me, can you help me?”, “Where is the hotel/airport/railway or bus station?”, “How can I book a room in this hotel?” etc.? Do you boldly go on a trip taking a pocket phrasebook with you? However, in the event of any situation when you need help or advice from a local resident, are you simply at a loss and cannot find the words to formulate your question or request? It is for these reasons that knowledge of English is very important for those who like to travel abroad. The ability to express yourself correctly and construct sentences correctly will make your vacation more comfortable.

Today, more and more people are trying to learn English, but there are also those who still have not realized the importance of foreign languages in the life of a modern person. Our article today is dedicated to these people. What prospects does it open to people?

Knowledge of the English language opens up new opportunities for us, enriches our inner world, and increases the level of our intelligence. English, like no other language, is widespread throughout the world and is one of the six most important languages on the planet recognized by the UN. That is why fluency in English has become for everyone today. For people who have mastered basic English course, it is much easier to travel to any country in the world, since English is understood almost everywhere. With knowledge of the English language, you won’t have to communicate “on your fingers” either with the staff of hotels, cafes and restaurants, or in shops, or even on the street with passers-by to find out where this or that attraction is located.

English language and career

Learning English is a step up the ladder of social status, since in the labor market a person who has attended basic English course, has every chance of getting a job in a prestigious foreign company or in a company that actively cooperates with foreign partners. Salaries in such organizations are, as a rule, quite high, but without knowledge of English there is nothing to even hope for for a vacant position in such a company, since the language will be needed for business correspondence or negotiations with partners from different countries. And if you have a desire to build a career abroad, then you need to learn English in advance not only for you, but for all members of your family whom you plan to take with you. Don't assume that English (basic course) you will be able to master it in no time when you find yourself in an English-speaking country. You won’t learn the language by yourself, so take care of it in advance. Otherwise, when you find yourself abroad and face to face with a problem called “yours doesn’t understand,” you risk being left without a livelihood and depriving your family of well-being.

English (basic course) as a way to improve quality of life

Possession at least basic English course will improve your standard of living and open up a lot of new opportunities for you. This includes finding new friends abroad on the Internet, reading interesting articles and works of literature in English, and watching English-language films without translation. And this is only a small part of what knowledge of English opens up for a person. Think about it, is it worth living blindly when there is a real opportunity to “see the light”? Choose the right one and start studying English, improve your knowledge until you can freely perceive English speech and express yourself independently, as well as read English-language literature without a dictionary.

How important a foreign language is can be understood at least by how much higher the salaries are offered to applicants who speak English, because many of them are ready to pay up to 35% of the basic salary just for the fact that you know English. Agree that this is a very significant increase.

Note that most often the way you can learn English (basic course) quickly, people who have basic knowledge and at least some vocabulary are interested. However, such knowledge in most cases is incorrect and fragmentary, so “finishing up” learning English in reality is not as easy as it might seem at the beginning. However, nothing is impossible, if only you have the desire and the right approach to the issue.

The ability to learn is necessary for every person. This is the key to his normal adaptation in society, as well as professional growth. Speech at the pedagogical council on the topic “The role of English in the lives of students” includes questions about the need to study English, its practical application in life, as well as what general educational skills and knowledge students acquire while studying at school. Having mastered the UUD, the child will not get confused in unpredictable life situations.

Report on the topic: “The role of English in the lives of students”

The tasks of a modern school are to develop in its students the qualities traditionally inherent in intellectuals: decency, responsibility, generosity, the need for creativity, the desire for freedom, the ability to understand and accept others, as well as physical and mental health.

It's no secret that knowledge of foreign languages not only opens up new perspectives and provides professional development, but also enriches the individual. No wonder they say "A man is as many times a man as he knows the languages."

Learning English gives us freedom of communication in the modern world . English is a global language and living in the modern world, there is a strong need to learn it.

What role does English play in the lives of schoolchildren?

And yet, English, why do we need it? But where would we be without him now? No educated person can disagree that knowledge of English is now simply necessary. Travelers need English, students need it, scientists, teachers, businessmen need it, even when playing games it is advisable to know English - everyone needs it! English is all around us. The English language has become so integrated into our daily lives that some people don’t even notice it or even suspect it.

English has become an international language, and there is no escape from it. If you know English, you can be sure that you will not get lost in any country in the world. Of course, you have been on the Internet, and is it possible to travel across the vastness of the global network without knowing English? It is very difficult, or rather not even possible, to learn all languages at once, and why? It is much easier to learn one English language; it will always be relevant. Everyone also knows that a computer and the English language are two inseparable things. Thus, one can endlessly give many examples of the need to know English.

It's no secret that nowadays specialists with knowledge of a foreign language are in great demand in the modern world. Philological education is aimed at developing language, linguistic, communicative and cultural competence. And since a foreign language is included in the field of “philology,” students can choose a wide range of specializations for their future profession.

For example: foreign language teacher; writer; librarian; art critic; journalist; media editor; specialist in the field of foreign trade; specialist in international relations; specialist in international law, specialist in information technology; specialist in the field of international tourism; specialist in the field of customs affairs.

The priority goal of school education is to develop students’ ability to independently set educational goals, design ways to implement them, monitor and evaluate their achievements. In other words, the formation of the ability to learn. The student himself must become the “architect and builder” of the educational process.

Achieving this goal becomes possible thanks to the formation of a system of universal educational activities. The concept of the development of universal educational actions was developed on the basis of a system-activity approach (L.S. Vygotsky, A.N. Leontiev, P.Ya. Galperin, D.B. Elkonin, V.V. Davydov, A.G. Asmolov) by the group authors: A.G. Asmolov, G.V. Burmenskaya, I.A. Volodarskaya, O.A. Karabanova, N.G. Salmina and S.V. Molchanov under the leadership of Alexander Grigorievich Asmolov.

As the famous parable says, to feed a hungry man you can catch a fish and feed him. Or you can do it differently - teach how to fish, and then a person who has learned to fish will never go hungry again.

(slide) the purpose of learning English is:

development of foreign language communicative competence, namely:

  • linguistic

    educational and cognitive.

IN The basis for success and independence in learning lies in general educational activities that have priority over narrow subject knowledge and skills. An English teacher is a model of communication in English and an assistant in the successful mastery of English speech.

(slide) Let's consider the types of UUD used in foreign language lessons:

(slide) General study skills help:

(slide)Cognitive UUD Cognitive actions include the actions of research, search and selection of necessary information, its structuring; modeling the content being studied, logical actions and operations, methods for solving problems.

Often a student's interest in learning arises when researching a topic. The child, as it were, turns into a little scientist, who is faced with the task of independently collecting the necessary information, making observations, drawing conclusions, and also evaluating his own results. In addition to the emergence of interest in knowledge, which, as a rule, weakens in schoolchildren during school, the student develops the ability to objectively relate to the results of his work.

(slide) Special educational skills teach:

(slide)Communicative UUD

Can we communicate?

The student learns to interact in society, acquires the ability to enter into dialogue, participate in collective discussion of problems, clearly express his thoughts, give reasons for his statements, and take into account the opinions of other people.

Communicative actions – provide opportunities for cooperation – (slide)

(slide) Personal UUD

By mastering personal universal skills, a child more successfully accepts the norms of behavior in society and learns to correctly evaluate himself and his actions. This contains a moral aspect: the ability to empathize, provide mutual assistance, and show responsiveness to your loved ones. However, for this, the child needs to learn to understand how his classmate, friend or relative might feel in a given situation. He must be able to discern what the person nearby needs, for example, um

(slide)The educational aspect in teaching English is designed to:

The second survey was on the topic: “Why is English interesting to me?” The results were similar.

It is interesting to learn about new facts and amazing events.

It is interesting to learn about people's lives and their activities.

It is interesting to find out the reasons for events.

Is it interesting to listen to the teacher’s explanations on this subject?

It is interesting to find additional information yourself, prepare messages, and speak with them in front of the class.

It’s interesting because the teacher teaches in an unusual way and this attracts students.

Interesting, because this subject is easy for me.

This subject is related to other subjects that fall within my interests.

Interesting as it is easy to get marks in this subject.

Based on all that has been said, we can conclude that The need for English is growing every year. English is taking huge steps into our lives. We have to learn English to keep up with the times. It is also worth noting that it is never too late to learn...

I, in turn, try to develop and educate in my students an understanding of the importance of learning a foreign language and the need to use it at least in some areas of life and in their future life. A foreign language undoubtedly develops in students patriotic and civic qualities, respect and a tolerant attitude towards other cultures.

Our life is unpredictable. Perhaps in a few years, when entering a university or other educational institutions, a student will need knowledge that is currently taught insufficiently at school. So that the child does not get confused in such a situation, he needs to master UUD - universal learning actions.

The ability to learn is necessary for every person. This is the key to his normal adaptation in society, as well as professional growth.

One day, guests came to a rich and noble Greek merchant for a feast. One of them said to the owner: “The whole city knows what a witty and resourceful slave you have. Send him to the market, let him bring us the most beautiful thing in the world.”

The owner sent Aesop. Aesop returns with a tray covered with a napkin. They lift it, and there lies the tongue. “Aesop, you brought the tongue!” “Isn’t it with our tongues that we pronounce words of tenderness, fidelity, love? With our tongue we proclaim peace, with our tongue we pronounce the word “freedom,” says Aesop.

After some time, the guests ask the owner for the resourceful slave to bring the worst thing. Aesop brought language again. “Isn’t that the worst thing?” he asks. “With the tongue we utter words of hatred, with the tongue we declare war, with the tongue we utter the word “slave.”

Introduction.

The language of any people is its historical memory, embodied in words. Thousands of years of spiritual culture and the life of society are uniquely and uniquely reflected in language, in its oral and written forms, in monuments of various genres. And, therefore, the culture of language, the culture of words appears as an inextricable link between many, many generations.

A lot has been written, said, published and talked about lately about language, culture, intercultural communication, and the role of language knowledge (native and foreign). Relevance studying the problem of the influence of knowledge of native and foreign languages on the life and progress of society in general, and on the development of each person in particular, is indisputable. And this is due, first of all, to understandable and objective reasons: rapid technological progress, which has opened up the latest means of communication for humanity, unprecedented methods of communication, globalization (in France called Americanization), ethnic conflicts, political cataclysms that “gave” the world millions of refugees and many others, because of which the whole world is now experiencing, according to Professor Svetlana Grigorievna Ter-Minasova, the so-called “cross-cultural boom”.

Subject of this work - “The role of language knowledge in human life.”

Subject For consideration, I chose the problem “The role of knowledge of a foreign (English) language in human life and modern society.”

While working on this problem, I tried to answer the following: questions :

  1. What is the importance of the English language in the modern world?
  2. What reasons motivate a person to learn English?
  3. What influence does English have on Russian?
  4. How are the language and culture of a people connected?
  5. What place does English occupy in the Kamchatka Territory?

Hypothesis problem researchI put forward the idea of the leading position of the English language in the modern world.

My research methods were: search, collection and analysis of information from books, textbooks, educational Internet sites, survey.

THE ROLE OF FOREIGN KNOWLEDGE(IN ENGLISH

IN HUMAN LIFE

The importance of English in the modern world

A Frenchman's Last Wish

A Frenchman was sent to prison for committing a crime. He was sentenced to death for committing a murder.

The fatal hour arrived. The prisoner's head was shaved. The priest, the lawyer and the warden came to visit the prisoner in his sell.

“Do you want anything?” the lawyer asked the prisoner. “A glass of wine, perhaps?”

“No, thank you.”

“Would you like a cigarette?”

“No.”

“It is customary to grant the prisoner’s last wish,” the lawyer explained. “Your last wish will be granted. What is it?”

“I want to study English,” the condemned man said.

There is a good expression: “The number of languages you know, the number of times you are human.” I think this is true. I am sure that people should know as many foreign languages as possible.

There are many countries in the world, and even more languages spoken by their inhabitants. And in this case we are not talking about a hundred or two, but several thousand. How can the population of our planet understand each other? But this goal is served by international languages, which allow us all to communicate with each other, regardless of nationality and place of residence. There is an opinion - the leading position among the languages of interethnic communication for all humanity, which plays an important role in the development of modern society, is occupied by the English language.

And you Ever thought about the question “How many people on the globe speak English?” According to various sources, more than 1 billion. And if for half of them it is native, then about 600 million chose exactly him as a foreigner.

Having studied various articles about the role and significance of the English language in printed and electronic publications, I found the following facts confirming its universal nature and role in international communication. Let me give you a few examples:

  1. English is designated as the official and working language of the United Nations.
  2. All kinds of summits and meetings of heads of state, signing of laws and decrees, negotiations and debates - all this is conducted in English.
  3. International trade, the banking system, and the transport system on land, at sea and in the air are carried out in English.
  4. The English language is a living communication tool for academicians, doctors of science, and scientists all over the world. More than 60% of all scientific journals are published in English.
  5. The Olympic Games and all kinds of competitions between countries have chosen English as the official language. In this photo, a graduate of our school, Valeria Dmitrieva, was a volunteer at the Winter Olympic Games in Sochi and worked with the national team from Switzerland, communicating with the athletes in English.
  6. English is everywhere - in the names of pop groups, in computer programs, in household items, on clothes, in magazines.

The search for answers to the basic question about the role of the English language in the modern world as a whole awakened in me a desire to find out its significance in the life of our peninsula.

In our region, English is studied everywhere: in secondary schools, colleges and technical schools, institutes and universities, centers of additional education, in various courses, with a tutor.

In the regional library named after S.P. Krasheninnikov has a department of foreign literature, created in 1991.

A linguistic center has been successfully operating in the library in Elizov for many years, and today the center opened its doors to us.

During diplomatic visits and at business meetings between government and business representatives of the peninsula with foreign politicians and partners, negotiations are conducted in English.

And the main area of application of the English language in Kamchatka is tourism.According to the website of the Kamchatka Territory government, about 36% of tourists who come to Kamchatka annually are foreigners. For example, in 2011, 10,300 foreign tourists visited the Kamchatka Territory, in 2013, 11,359 foreign guests, andin 2014 – 15 thousand people. These are mainly: bear hunters from the USA, sport fishing enthusiasts, cruise ship passengers, and connoisseurs of ethnographic tourism.

Certain sporting events in the region are associated with the use of English. World stars from all over the world come to take part in the biathlon festival named after V. Fatyanov.

Many people tell me that due to the special geographical and economic features of Kamchatka, we are in some way excluded from a wide range of opportunities for learning and using the English language. Yes, we live in a remote corner of our country, but the Internet and other modern means of communication provide us with the opportunity to learn English using programs and materials from various educational and linguistic sites, and watch programs and films on foreign satellite channels. Our conference today was organized by the online community of teachers “Linguists of Kamchatka”.And we thus become part of a single global English-speaking community.

I associate the future of the English language in Kamchatka with the further development of the tourism industry and such areas as eco-tourism and sports tourism, with the development and implementation of various investment programs based on interaction with foreign partners. For example, yesterday, on the website of the online newspaper KAM-24, I read the news “The day before, Rostourism held a press conference, at which the head of the department, Oleg Safonov, announced his intention to increase the flow of foreign tourists to Kamchatka to 100 thousand per year.” Let's hope so.

When thinking about the role of the English language in the modern world, it is impossible to ignore the question of its significance in human life and the reasons that motivate it to be studied.

While working on this problem, I had a question:Why do people study English?

I invited my classmates and students of other classes, parents and teachers to identify the reasons that motivate a person to study foreign languages. As a result, the following results were obtained:

  1. In the diagram we see:
  • 61% of students surveyed believe that they study a foreign language in order to communicate with native speakers in their native language and make new friends from other countries;
  • 22% of students are confident that people study foreign languages to be better educated;
  • 11% believe that the reason for their interest in learning foreign languages, and primarily English, is the desire to independently and confidently travel around the world, learn a lot of new and interesting things about different countries, their culture, customs, expand their horizons, etc. ;
  • 4% really like to listen to music in a foreign language, and they want to understand what the songs are about;
  • For 2% of schoolchildren, the reason for studying a foreign language is simple - the school subject “English” is on the lesson schedule and needs to be learned.
  1. What do our Parents think?:
  • 83% believe that it is necessary to know a foreign language, because... knowledge of, for example, English expands the prospects for obtaining a prestigious job and a successful career;
  • 17% believe that the desire to learn more about the world around us and make new friends from different countries motivates a person to study foreign languages.
  1. Teacher survey results:
  • 36% of teachers are confident that people learn foreign languages to participate in international interaction, communication, and travel;
  • 38% see the reason for interest in learning a foreign language in a person’s desire to get acquainted with the culture of another country;
  • 14% believe that the modern person’s need for self-realization “pushes” him to study a foreign language;
  • 12% believe that the reason lies in the importance of receiving a quality education, in which knowledge of a foreign language is an integral component.

From the data presented in the diagrams, we see that the opinions of different groups of respondents are different: if the majority of students study English for communication, then 83% of parents study English for a successful career. But there is no consensus among school teachers. But all respondents were unanimous in one thing - it is imperative to learn and know a foreign language. And it must be English.

Thus, after analyzing the survey data, I came to the conclusion that the reasons that motivate one to study a foreign (English) language and subsequently determine its role and significance in a person’s life can be divided into professional and personal.

Firstly, career. The language will help you get a prestigious job, communicate freely with business partners, and take part in international conferences.

Secondly, traveling abroad. Being in a foreign country, you feel much more confident, knowing that, if something happens, you can always talk to the locals, ask for directions, and clarify the location.

Thirdly, study. Knowledge of the English language makes it possible to study at prestigious foreign universities, read books without translation, and study the latest technology and equipment.

And also, knowing English, you always have the opportunity to talk with interesting people on various topics in English, make useful contacts and make new friends among foreigners.

As for me, I study English because it is much more interesting for me to watch films in English without translation, because... I can hear the voice and intonation of the actors, listen to the music and understand the meaning of the lyrics, I am learning the language in order to get a good job in a prestigious company in the future. I just don’t want to lag behind life and want to know what’s going on in the world. By studying English, I can get answers to many questions that interest me. I also learn the language because I know for sure that in our world, a world without borders, knowing it will help me easily find a common language with foreigners on vacation and during a business trip.

Several years ago, while on holiday abroad, I got lost and English helped me find my way to the hotel. That evening, by my own example, I was convinced that the famous expression “English is the language of international communication, a means of interaction between people of different nationalities” are not empty words! Without exaggeration, I can say that the English language sometimes determines the destinies of people and even saves lives.

So, we can talk endlessly about the role of the English language in the world and its importance is difficult to overestimate. Undoubtedly is the fact that English is an important component in the life of a modern person, and everyone can find more than one reason for learning it and improving their skills. The world is changing rapidly. We must understand each other. And English confidently copes with the role of an interethnic language. English is the future. I'm sure of it!

In conclusion, I would like to say that learning English is my hobby and the chosen topic is very interesting for me. I plan to continue studying the role of the English language in the modern world, its influence on Russian and other languages. But this will be a topic for another speech.

I advise all my friends: “Learn English!”

A- English will be useful in life.
